FEATURE COURSE

NamSeoul Country Club

NamSeoul is conveniently located thirty minutes to an hour outside of Seoul and serves as the host course for a stop on the Asian Tour (Maekyung Open Golf Championship). It is one of the older courses in the area and provides great insight into a higher end Korean club.

Most of the property is quite undulating, resulting in many of the holes having severe drop offs or uphill/blind shots into the greens. For the par 4s/5s, I found approach shots to be less enjoyable, as the constant uphill greens left me with little to no idea for where my ball ended up. On the other hand, the par 3s tended to have severe drop offs, which made them exciting to play.

Employing a two green system (fairly common amongst the older Korean courses), many of the greens feel too close together, as an errant shot often lands on the wrong green. I believe NamSeoul would benefit greatly from combining the two greens on each hole to create one solid green with protection from the bunkers.

Many of the holes blend together for me, but overall it was an enjoyable round. I hope to return during the pro tournament so I can see how the professionals tackle this course.

Described as “an old-school Asian Tour course,” with greens sloping almost exclusively from back-to-front, the 18-hole layout at NamSeoul Country Club has hosted nearly every edition of the Maekyung Open since the first edition of this event in 1982.

Fashioned in 1971 by Seiichi Inoue, the unheralded Japanese master of design, NamSeoul Country Club traverses hilly and mountainous terrain where you’ll need a deft putting stroke to master the slippery greens.

Former Chairman of the Korea Golf Association (KGA), Jeong-soo Hur, founded the club and he then passed the reins to his son Kwang-soo Hur who is also now KGA Chairman.

Apart from hosting the annual Maekyung Open, NamSeoul is also the venue for the Korea Amateur Golf Championship.
