FEATURE COURSE
Weihai Point Golf Course
Status Golf Difficulty Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 Stars)
📍 Location: Weihai, Shandong Province, China — set on a narrow peninsula stretching into the Yellow Sea, surrounded by ocean on three sides and dramatic coastal cliffs.
🕳️ Layout: 18-hole coastal championship course (Par 72, ~6,400 yards) blending links-style exposure with tree-lined parkland holes.
💥 Difficulty: Strategic coastal golf — wind, cliffside holes, and precise approach play demand thoughtful shot selection.
🌊 Vibe: Raw coastal beauty with modern resort polish — ocean views, rugged rock formations, and wide skies give the course a dramatic, almost cinematic feel.
🏌️ The Course
Weihai Point Golf Resort offers one of the more unique golf experiences in China — a layout perched on a slender peninsula where the sea constantly shapes both the scenery and the strategy.
From the opening holes, the course reveals its personality. Fairways move gently through preserved pine trees and rolling terrain, while the coastline begins to appear more frequently as the round progresses. Several early holes ease you into the rhythm of the course, but the ever-present ocean breeze reminds you that this is not a place for autopilot golf.
Where Weihai Point really separates itself is along the coastal stretch. Holes running beside the cliffs provide some of the most dramatic visuals in Asian golf — tee shots framed by sea and rock, with greens perched close enough to the water that the sound of waves becomes part of the round.
Approach play is the real test here. Greens vary from subtle slopes to bold contours, and many are guarded by steep-faced bunkers that demand careful distance control and spin management. Missing in the wrong spot rarely leaves a simple recovery.
The par 3s are standout moments. Often exposed to the wind and visually intimidating against the ocean backdrop, they reward a committed strike but quickly punish hesitation.
Late in the round, the course delivers its most memorable challenge. The par-5 16th is a particularly iconic hole — a left dogleg where players must carry roughly 200 yards off the tee before navigating a green sitting beside the sea and surrounded by bunkers. Par here feels like a small victory.
By the time you reach the closing stretch, the combination of coastal wind, strategic bunkering, and subtly contoured greens makes every shot feel significant. It’s a layout that quietly builds pressure — never unfair, but always demanding thoughtful execution.
✨ Highlights
Spectacular coastal setting: Few courses sit so dramatically on a peninsula, with ocean views dominating large parts of the round.
Varied hole design: A mix of cliffside, parkland, and tree-lined holes keeps the round visually and strategically fresh.
Strategic bunkering: Steep-faced bunkers shape decision-making from tee to green.
Award-winning redesign: The course was extensively rebuilt by Golfplan in 2007, elevating it into one of China’s most respected resort courses.
💣 Hazards & Things to Watch
Coastal wind: Conditions can shift quickly, especially on exposed holes along the cliffs.
Cliffside greens: Stunning to look at, but misses can leave tricky up-and-downs.
Strategic bunkering: Deep, steep bunkers punish poorly judged approaches.
Deceptive visuals: Ocean backdrops can distort depth perception and distance control.
🧃 The Verdict
Weihai Point Golf Resort is a striking coastal course that blends scenic drama with thoughtful strategy. The combination of cliffside holes, ocean winds, and carefully contoured greens makes it a rewarding test for players who enjoy planning their way around a course rather than simply overpowering it.
It’s the kind of layout where the scenery is unforgettable — but the golf itself is what keeps you thinking long after the round.
If you haven’t played it yet, drop into Status Golf and check it out — it’s also the course featured for our 4th Birthday Competition this March 2026. A perfect chance to experience one of China’s most scenic coastal courses without leaving the simulator.
